Imaging

A number of imaging projects have been, are and will be undertaken in order to make the material in the herbarium more easily accessible and usable for people worldwide and in partial fulfillment of the Herbarium’s commitment to the Convention in Biological diversity. Most of the funding for the current imaging work has been obtained via a series of grants from the Mellon Foundation. The grants have enabled the construction of an herbarium database - Penelope – which holds details of the materials imaged. The images and their metadata are being gradually mounted by the Mellon Foundation on the Jstor web site

These images are particularly important as they include images of specimens which are never sent on loan. Amongst these latter materials are Harvey’s Travelling Sets of Algae. A recent paper in Biology and Environment details the Australian elements of these collections and their taxonomic importance (see http://www.ria.ie/Publications/Journals/Biology-and-Environment/Buy-online.aspx).

Harvey's Travelling Sets of Algae originate from Ceylon, the Friendly Islands and Australia. There are seven books of specimens from Australia and one each from Ceylon and the Friendly Islands. Preliminary versions of the data on these materials are reproduced here (below): fully corrected  accounts of the Australian collections are available from the web-site cited above.
